Watermelon Margarita

This Watermelon Margarita is made with only 3 simple ingredients (yes, only 3!) and can be served frozen or on the rocks. Naturally sweetened with only fruit, this cocktail is sure to become a go-to every summer!

Watermelon Margarita served on the rocks and frozen

If you’re looking for an easy-to-make and refreshing cocktail to sip on during the hot summer months, then this Watermelon Margarita is for you!

It’s naturally sweet, just the right amount of boozy, and one of the most delicious margaritas you’ll make all year!

3 Simple Ingredients You’ll Need

This is one of my favorite summer margarita recipes because you only need 3 ingredients:

  • watermelon
  • tequila
  • lime juice

In other types of margaritas, you typically see the addition of a sweetner like agave syrup or simple syrup, but not in this recipe. The watermelon is already so naturally sweet that you don’t need to add anything extra.

There’s also usually a little triple sec in margaritas to give it a hint of orange flavor, but you also don’t need that in this recipe.

How to Make a Watermelon Margarita

To make it on the rocks – Simply add some cubed watermelon, tequila, and lime juice in a blender and puree until smooth. Serve it over ice in a glass rimmed with salt and tajin (or chili powder) and drink up!

To make it frozen – This version requires a little planning since you need to freeze the cubed watermelon beforehand. I recommend cutting the watermelon the night before and freezing it overnight so it’s completely frozen and ready to go when you need it.

Then, add the frozen watermelon, tequila, lime juice and a little ice to a blender and blend until slushy!

Tips and Tricks

  • The best way to freeze watermelon – Cut the watermelon into cubes and then place them on a large baking sheet in a single layer. Place the baking sheet in the freezer and freeze. Once the watermelon is frozen, you can transfer the cubes to a freezer-safe zip-top bag for easy storage.
  • Make sure to get a ripe watermelon to ensure the fruit is juicy and sweet! Here’s a great article with tips on how to pick a good watermelon.
  • You can use gold or silver tequila. I personally prefer the taste of gold or anejo tequila in this recipe because it compliments the refreshing watermelon very well, but silver or blanco tequila also works!

The best watermelon-based alcoholic drinks I’ve ever had used strained watermelon. It’s a pain, I know. But, in this case, I don’t really want to taste the pulp. Rest of this recipe is simple & refreshing. Appreciate (and concur!) with the tequila advice… go gold!
