This fish taco sauce is the perfect blend of sour cream, mayonnaise, lime juice, garlic and adobo sauce from canned chipotle peppers. Creamy and tangy with a hint of spice, it’s the best sauce for fish tacos and all types of fish!

Fish taco sauce in a jar with a spoon

If you’re making fish tacos (or any seafood), then you need to make this sauce!

Whether you’re making a beer-battered fish like in these Baja Fish Tacos, a grilled fish like in these Grilled Shrimp Skewers, or a simple pan-seared fish like in these classic Fish Tacos, it simply isn’t complete without a creamy and tangy sauce to go with it.

This sauce pairs perfectly with all seafood including tilapia, mahi mahi, shrimp, cod, halibut and salmon. It’s light and refreshing because of the lime juice, creamy and irresistible because of the mayo and sour cream, and a touch smoky thanks to the adobo sauce from the canned chipotle peppers.

Ingredients in fish taco sauce on a table

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • 2 teaspoons adobo sauce (from canned chipotles in adobo)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon table salt
Fish taco sauce being mixed in a bowl

To make this fish taco sauce, simply whisk together all the ingredients in a small bowl until fully combined.

If you prefer a spicier sauce, taste and add more adobo sauce until it’s to your liking. You can also add in some chopped chipotle chiles in adobo sauce if you like it extra spicy.

Serve it immediately or cover and refrigerate it until you’re ready to eat.

I like to transfer the sauce to a small squeeze condiment bottle for easy serving, but you can also store it in any jar or container you have.

Terrific sauce. Made it serve with fish tacos but I can also see it on chicken and pork. Easy to prepare. I added more adobo and a Chipotle chile for extra kick. Comes together super fast; especially if you use an immersion blender to puree the chile into the rest of the ingredients.

Glorious sauce. I did do a bit of switching up. I’ve never been a fan of garlic powder so I shortened the amount and added a teaspoon of fresh minced garlic. Also, just to add a blend of heat I added a tablespoon of salsa verde and a sprinkle of pepper flakes…

So good it’s great. Use on fish tacos or shrimp tacos. I used Mexican sour cream, it’s a bit thinner than regular sour cream. Time to make the slaw!!!!!

I gave your recipe a shot for our fish tacos yesterday and all I can say is…
This sauce tastes like I ordered it at a GOOD restaurant.
Spicy, creamy, and the garlic and onion powder gave the perfect amount of pungency!
